March Feature – Imp’s Delight

Tyrion Lannister: One day, after our queen has taken the Seven Kingdoms… I’d like to have my own vineyard. Make my own wine. The Imp’s Delight. Only my close friends could drink it.

From Game of Thrones – Season 6 Episode 8: ‘No One’ (6×08)

He might not have ended up on the Iron Throne, but he did make his way into our hearts and onto our label! His love of red wine and a good time made Tyrion a favorite character of Bar Z owner and vintner, Monty Dixon.

You might be wondering how a small winery in Canyon, TX ended up with the trademark from an HBO sensation. The answer is a little like Tyrion himself…smart, scrappy, and pretty funny. Monty had a tradition of watching Game of Thrones every Sunday from his hidden man cave at the winery. When this episode aired in 2016, Monty immediately loved that scene and decided that we needed to make a wine called “Imp’s Delight” in honor of his favorite character. In order for us to use this on our label, we would need the trademark. In true Monty fashion, he called our trademark attorney right in the middle of the episode! As the 70-something man from Minnesota awoke to answer his phone, you can imagine his confusion when the Texan on the other end of the phone needed a trademark on a Sunday night.  They hashed out whether or not it would have an apostrophe, and the man promised he would file first thing in the morning.  Monty received a phone call the next day, letting him know that we filed first for the trademark, but never having seen the show, he was amazed at the thousands of people that applied after we did.

Fast forward to December 10, 2016, when we bottled a 2012 Bayer Vineyards Tempranillo, and we finally got to put “Imp’s Delight” on a bottle. The 2014 is our second vintage of Imp’s Delight, and you might notice the fun change to the bottle…its small stature matches that of its beloved namesake! Same vineyard, same grape, same Bar Z quality. If you drink and you know things, this wine is for you.
